Today Aunt B., a Democrat, posted about The treatment of the Freshman Republicans in the Tennessee Legislature.
Essentially, the incumbent Republicans and Democrats think these new guys–most of whom came in on a Tea Party campaign–are a joke. So much so that Legislator Mike Turner tells an anecdote in the comments. A funny little story which absolutely makes my flesh crawl. It seems that the legislature stayed late one night (horrors! Working past 5:30!) to vote on “The Crazy bills”, as Turner puts it. As a joke the incumbent Republicans voted “Nay” on things brought by their fellow party members while the minority Democrats voted “yay.” (I should add that the purpose of all this late voting was to deal with these bills after the press went home. So much for all those sunshine laws I see my hardcore democratic friends pushing.)
I’m a libertarian. I am one knowing full well that I will most likely never see my party have a majority. But I have to go where my conscience takes me. And I know, watching it as closely as I have in the past, Nothing ever changes. There will always be an entrenched Old Guard to vote down anything which smacks of Hope and Change. Votes mean very little in this present world. It seems to me the voters of Tennessee sent the state government a message, and the message they get back is “nice try, but we go for the Status Quo here.”.
And lest you mistakenly think I’m saying only the Democrats do this I would point you to the utter lack of Hope and Change resulting from President Obama’s win.
I know the temptation for all the democrats out there is to read what she wrote and to breathe a sigh of relief. But it happens to your guys too. You know it does. How is this really working in anyone’s favor?
