Yesterday several of the folks I follow on Twitter sent around a link to a website that I’ll not repeat here. The basic gist of it was that people all over the country upload photos they’ve taken of other customers at a well-known, oft-despised discount store. As you can imagine there are photos upon photos of overweight, underweight, malnourished and poorly maintained people. Each shot is accompanied by pithy, mocking text.
And I was disgusted.
Disgusted that people who are blessed with so much delight in mocking those who have less. Many of those who sent the link around are Christians. I wonder if God and Jesus are sitting up in heaven laughing at pictures of how badly we dress, how fat we are. Something tells me the answer is “no”.
You’re right.
Full disclosure, I saw that website and was amused at some of the pictures.
But you’re right, it’s disgusting.
I was talking with someone else about how some of these people are just a different culture than me. Maybe it’s a culture I call “redneck” or “hick,” but just because they dress differently or talk differently it doesn’t mean they are inferior to me.
If there were a website mocking people of a another culture — for instance, the Amish — we would find it inappropriate.
I don’t even get the point of most of those pics. What’s bad about a guy who rolls his shorts up just above the knee? And is it socially unacceptable to buy two cases of Ramen? The guy standing with one foot resting on the bottom rack of his shopping cart… so? The 12 year old boy with a pony tail… so? The site seems to be down. Good riddance.
You might enjoy what Penn has to say about anti-walmart bigotry
Is the idea making fun of people who shop at Wal-Mart because Wal-Mart is loathed by the liberal community, or is it just to make fun of people? I’m not familiar with this site (nor want to be).
i’m one of them.. i was giggling at the double mullet pic & the guy with the matching shirt/short outfit.. im not perfect, never claimed to be, and those i giggled at couldn’t help it. if i let ya down in that regard, apologies.
I’m not perfect either, I don’t make fun of weight, but I will usually make fun of mullets.
“Is the idea making fun of people who shop at Wal-Mart because Wal-Mart is loathed by the liberal community, or is it just to make fun of people?”
Those two things aren’t mutually exclusive.
