- I hate when they do this. I thought it was going to be a two-hour new episode. Nawp. It’s a one-hour “since we’ve been off the air for 9 months” recap episode followed by a one-hour new episode. Frabjous.
- I ended up eating my pizza during a TiVo’d episode of People’s Court.
The attorney for Oceanic is named after Satan. More specifically, he’s named after the Destroyer and guardian of the underworld.
What I found really interesting was that in many Mystical traditions, “Abaddon” has become the place-name for “The Valley Of Darkness” that a mystic travels through in order to have the greater secrets of the mystery revealed. As a Christian mystic, I believe that Christ has borne for us the greater portion of Abaddon–that which is death of the soul and seperation from God, the torments of hell–, but that our life on earth is a sort of lesser Abaddon through which we travel in order to have a greater understanding of the Mystery of God upon our death. Our trials here on earth represent tasks through which we come to the fullness of understanding of the Divine Mystery.
So what about Lost? Well, I think that that’s a lot of what the Lost writers are trying to explore. They’re looking at the revelations of Mystery. Hence naming the Oceanic attorney “Abaddon”–the Lostaways take Oceanic to the Island, and the Island is the place where Mysteries are revealed.
This is a great theory and I think you are right on target.
I love smart television.
P.S. Jack is a boob.
yeah, but I got the impression that dude is not actually with Oceanic — that he was posing as an attorney to gain access to Hurley, and to find out where “they” are — did you not come away with the same thoughts?
Very cool….I NEVER would have caught that one. Add that one to the “to think about” pile!
But I do not think he was really with Oceanic. I think he is one of the ‘others’ that live off the island. Like the priest and the woman Desmond tried to buy the ring from. (who happed to be related to each other..freaky).
Anyway I don’t have any proof of that, just a guy feeling.

I used this video in class yesterday— thought you’d be interested in it as well. The Mystery Box thing and all…
I dunno, the more I think about it, it seems too on-the-nose. Like “Louis Cipher” in Angel Heart. Why not just call him Joe Evil?
[…] good. As if his conversation with Hurley wasn’t enough to make you suspicious of the man, Kat says, “The attorney for Oceanic is named after Satan. More specifically, he’s named after the […]
I’m shyed away from trying to analyze Lost that way too much. Seems to me that they like to introduce many obscure references that never really seem to be resolved in the story (I guess I should say “so far”). I’m really beginning to think the writers are often just throwing them in, in hopes that fans will come up with someway to “make it work” on their own, thereby making the writers look brilliant.
You think that first hour was bad. I got a THIRD and FOURTH hour tivo’d on Wednesday that was last year’s season finale with “cute” little pop-up video type captions explaining what was going on. I guess they were trying to catch people up who had never watched it before. By the time I got to see the actual new episode, I was none too impressed.
