Two VENTS in two days. Not good. So I’m More tagging this one. It’ll maybe make my blog look less insane. Maybe.
I read a lot of blogs these days. More than I used to. More than is probably good for me. Yesterday was Independence Day, and I actually quit reading blogs early.
Look, folks. I KNOW that this country isn’t perfect. I know that the current President has made some gigantic errors in fiscal and foreign policies. I know there are hungry, sick and dying people in every city and town of this country. I know that Congress is a passel of jackals where party ideology matters less and less, while lobbying matters more and more. Things are a far bloody cry from what anyone would call “perfect”.
But here’s the thing.
You are able to sit in front of a computer and say whatever you want about the government without having your door kicked in by soldiers. You are able to pursue happiness in many ways unheard of in other countries. There is so much that is good about this country. Ask any one of the millions of people clamouring to stay here. Ask any one of the tens of millions striving to come here.
I get that you’re unhappy. But, frankly, you look kind of like the world’s biggest jerk when you get all contrary and start in on your temper tantrums about how “there ain’t nuttin’ to celebrate” or “America makes Baby Thomas Jefferson cry”. It’s the 4th of July. This holiday is about honouring the good. We have 364 days to bitch and moan about what’s wrong with America. Can’t you take one bleeding day to at least let the rest of us celebrate what’s RIGHT?
AMEN! I’m right with you on that. I wish Bush was out, but damn…I’ve been to communist countries back during the cold war…
We’ve got it GREAT people. You have no idea…

It’s easy to see how all the negative in blogs/blogging can get you down and grind on your soul. I understand.
I had my usual moment of gratitute last night, that I could safely sit outside in my yard, watch fireworks and not have any fear for all the other things those explosions, pops and sounds represent in other countries at this point. At no point did I have the urge to duck and cover because that Chinese Screamer sounds like incoming mortar fire or that the jumping jacks sounded like small arms fire.
It is still a great blessing that we can take our total security for granted in America no matter what else is going on with our government.
[…] Katherine Coble has a beef with folks who use the celebration of our country’s independence as an excuse to trash it: I get that you’re unhappy.
