Well, it's possible that I just took it in stride because, you know, there's so much of that in so many novels from the '30s and '40s. It's hard not to encounter it in books from the period -- try reading a Dorothy Sayers mystery without running into it, for instance. So I may just have bleeped that aspect of ATGiB out, mentally. Or maybe it was so awful that I've repressed the whole thing, and that's why I can't remember much about the book and was never interested in re-reading it.

There is a LOT of it. All of it couched in "this is just how it was back then." But the fact that her family were actually German immigrants (she changed them to Irish for the story since the book came out during WW2) it makes it even more unsettling for me.

Actually there's so much anti-Semitism I'm surprised you forgot it. Much of it is incidental ("Go get some Jew bread") but some of it--her brother's gang beating up a Jewish boy for laughs in a scene written to appear comical, Francie's tale of her beloved 'pickle day' where she orders "a penny sheeny pickle"--is just kick-in-the-teeth bad.

Pardon the brevity and the typos. This was sent from my iPhone.

Great article, great points! As I said to you somewhere else,

"It reminds me a little bit of Glenn Beck and I'm starting to like the term "Neo-Glennbeckian". A lot. (probably too much.)"

An overheard conversation that I imagined in my head: "As a believer, I'm very Neo-Glennbeckian, you know, kind of a Pro-Life, Anti-gay marriage, pro-military Libertarian. Ron Paul? Oh, dear me, goodness, no! He has a very radical foreign policy that would be bad for Israel..."

(Sorry to be like Jonah Lehrer and plagiarize myself all over the internet...)

I wouldn't be surprised if all the overt anti-Semitism made it too bitter a pill to swallow. Because while it was realistic I know I was uncomfortable with all of it and can only imagine how much more uncomfortable you would've been.

I Did Not Know That about ATGiB. The truth is, the book didn't resonate with me the way it does with you. I remember only 3 things about it: Francie as a girl going to the doctor with her brother and being talked about as dirty as if she wasn't there and saying "my brother's dirty, too" which was awesome; Francie deliberately memorizing her surroundings when she learns that war has been declared, which seemed odd to me in a way that probably explains why I'm not a writer; Francie "seeing the ghost" of her father in her boyfriend, which made me feel that that relationship was sort of icky. Whereas other books I read at that age have left me with memories of every scene, practically. And yet I should have identified with a lot of it; Francie could have been my father's mother in a lot of ways, and you'd think it would have had more of an impact on me. I wonder whether the tacked-on ending got in the way.

I'd like to thank Wordpress for not informing me that I had a comment. It's been screwing up lately. Bah.

Yeah, Francie once Johnnie Nolan dies and she says "to hell with God" is where I stop being Francie. Funnily, that's where the original book actually ended, but Harper & Bros. didn't think it would sell if it stopped there so Betty Smith took what she had begun writing as a Romance sequel and tacked it on at the end to give everyone their happyish endings. You can definitely tell how the book changes voice and style at that point.

I've thought about an Indiana story and at times have tried it, but I don't really have a guiding purpose to make it practical for writing yet.
