Yesterday evening my Sims 2 crashed to the desktop. After an hour of trying to resurrect all my fake people, I pretty much said “screw it. This is a game. It’s supposed to be fun and I are not having fun.”
Then I saw my Civilization IV game just teetering on the stack of crap on the corner of my desk. I didn’t like it back in December when I got it for Christmas, and so I lent it to Casey. He loved it, bought it for himself, and sent my copy back to me. (See how law-abiding we are! ::pats self on back for not pirating software::)
So there it was, right where I “put it away”. Because in the world of my desk “putting it away” actually means “finding a place to set it where it won’t cause the whole stack to topple.” It’s as though I work in the middle of a giant monkey-infested software Jenga game.
Thus I broke it out and started playing. It’s a very good game–as long as you don’t come into it hard and fast on the heels of another turn-based strategy game. Which is what I tried to do in December, which is what frustrated me. I still have problems with the AI being frustratingly limited, but whatever. I can get over that.
The best thing, though, and the thing I’m here to actually tell you about once I’m done sidetracking myself with ponderances of my messy workspace, is that the soundtrack to Civ IV is off the charts phenomenal. There are EIGHT HOURS of some of the best, most relaxing and atmospheric pieces I’ve ever heard. Much of it is classical, some of it is composed directly for the game. All of it was spectacular enough to motivate me. I spent 20 minutes last night copying the music files into iTunes. It’s that great.
Playing this game is like playing a pavilion at Epcot.

Love my Civ IV. Of course, I’ve loved the whole Civ series since the first one came out back in ‘91. I think I may still have the original floppies from the original Civilization but I doubt if they still work now.
He loved it
Loved is perhaps too strong of a word. I liked Civilzation IV, but it has a whole buttload of little annoying quirks. At the core it is still Civilization, one of the best turn based strategy games there ever was.
Also if you liked the Civ IV score, check out the BioShock score. 2K is giving it away.
Finally, I saw something last night that I was going to blog about, but decided to watch Apacolypto instead. This is right up your alley I think: Get Lamp.
Loved Apocalypto.
Am going to play BioShock eventually. Once we buy it.
But I’m losing the power of speech with how much I am thrilled by the Get Lamp thing.
The Zork shout-out was one of the only things I liked about that new NBC series “Chuck”.
My heart will always belong to Zork.
I meant to also mention this:

Featuring a Steve Meretzky cameo. Awesome.
Do you want me to write the blog post for you?
Because I’m all thinking that I need to write a big long Zork post now.
Dude in the video has my lava lamp.
Do you want me to write the blog post for you?
Yeah, because yours will be like 1000 times better and then I can just make another one of my “What she/he said” posts.
Civilization is digital crack. I was off of it for years, but picked it up again at IV.
The worst part is, I am horrible at it and still can’t quit playing.
Never played Civ IV (or any of the Civ games)…Right now I’m addicted to Everquest II, picking it up after being on hiatus from gaming for two whole years!!!
What do you gals and guys think of EQII?
What do you gals and guys think of EQII?
I think that is the one game I have sworn to avoid at all costs. They call it EverCrack for a reason, and I get sucked into gaming enough that I don’t need to introduce that potent an alternative reality into my life.
I’ve been debating getting into World of Warcraft for awhile now, but I hope to never try that first hit of EQ.
Yeah, because yours will be like 1000 times better
Or at the very least 1000 times longer, and with a lot of toity british spelling. ;-p
Civilization is digital crack.
Yeah, exactly. I mean, I’ve got it bad enough from Civ…EQ would get me divorced. I’d be in some shelter in some church basement somewhere explaining to a 19-year-old journalism major how I once had a nice home and good marriage until I made the wrong choices.
I would then go shuffle through the line for another hot coffee in a cardboard cup with foldout winged handles into which I’d pour 6 tablespoons of sugar and reminisce about the life I’d given up to video games.
They call it EverCrack for a reason…
Yeah, I can see why…The other night I spent 3-1/2 hours in that “alternative reality” without ever noticing it! Good thing is, they have an alarm system built into the game…I think I’ll turn mine down to 2 hours or less now!

Civ IV has an alarm in it, too. As I discovered at 2:30am today.
I think the games added alarms after some dude sued Sid Meier’s Firaxis for him not getting his work finished on time.
(I can’t find the link now, but some guy filed a lawsuit saying that he couldn’t finish writing his book because of his Civ III addiction.)
Great. It’s killing me that my google-fu is weak today.
I cannot find that article.
But I did find CivAnon
I think it’s a joke, but half the time I can’t tell anymore.
Ay yi yi! Labor Day weekend my BiL was in town and he and DB were talking about CivIV and the music and how great it was. I rolled my eyes and laughed at them. I had no idea it was such a phenomenon!
Okay, so the point of the post wasn’t how wonderful Sims2 is, but here is my question anyway–is Sims 2 better than the Sims? I have all the expansion packs to the Sims and I love my people, though I have been neglecting them lately for Diner Dash (working away from work). Josh thinks I should try Sims 2. I’m kind of leery. Should I invest in Sims 2 when I already love Sims? What do you think, assuming you are the expert that I think you probably are…?
I had no idea it was such a phenomenon!
It’s just really super-good ambient music. It’s like the ultimate in Mixed Tapes For Geeks.
so the point of the post wasn’t how wonderful Sims2 is
But Sims2 IS wonderful.
As a Sims fan, I’d highly recommend Sims 2. Highly. I was skeptical, too, having invested so much time and cash in Sims. But the new dimensions to game play are totally worth the investment. But it IS an investment.
The whole life-cycle & genetics thing is completely addictive. I get way off on building Sim families.
There are a few problems–namely that the game can sometimes crash on you, and it can get repetitive after a bit.
But I do really like it, and I find the architecture modes to be very meditatively relaxing.
In his intro to Pastwatch, Orson Scott Card described Civilization (II in those days) as a great impediment to meeting deadlines…but I don’t think he ever sued anybody connected with the game.
[...] Maybe I’ll take a page from Katherine’s book and go play Civilization. [...]
