You know, writing post titles can be hard work. The title is where you grab your reader, where you lure them in with the promise of more interesting things to come. I went through several bits before settling on the oddity before you now.
I used to like Thursdays because they are a sort of “friday junior”, where the end of the week is in sight and you can let down your hair. I’ve been having a strange spate of odd Thursdays, though, and this one shapes up to be just as odd as the rest. Rest assured, however, that I will not eat a ladybug. I only said that I must eat a ladybug as a lure to lull you into thinking this was going to be an interesting post with thrill-a-minute Fear Factor overtones.
It’s not.
This is the post where I tell you I’ll be filling in temporarily over at Nashville Is Talking. I know how much that site has meant to me as a blogger, a Nashvillian and a person. Thanks to NiT I have a couple dozen actual FRIENDS in Nashville…people I know outside of work and church. Thanks to NIT I was able to deal head-on with a major life crisis back in April. Brittney Gilbert was key to all of that. So despite our myriad differences on everything from God to coffee, I consider her a friend. I’m sick that she’s now out of a job because of the poison of others. In my ideal world, Brittney would come back to NiT after a few days of much-anticipated (she had a vacation scheduled for these dates) restoration. But I get it if she decides to lay low for awhile. (Is it Lay or Lie? I never know for sure.) I’m not guessing that I can take her place because I couldn’t. She was her own unique voice, completely irreplacible.
I’m of the firm opinion, though, that the NiT community is also irreplacible. I don’t want to see it go away in a slow sputtering whirlwind of germy air and spit like a deflating balloon. I want to see it continue to thrive in some form or fashion for quite a lot time yet. I hope we can find a way to do that.

Best wishes for making this transition a good one for all involved. A blessing of it is that eventually the current storm will subside and you’ll be left with the usual irritants. Which, you know, now don’t seem quite as bad.
“the usual irritants”
This made me giggle.
hey — hope things go well for you.
I’m of the firm opinion, though, that the NiT community is also irreplacible.
As much as well all love Brittney and hate to see her go, I feel that the burden will be on us to make sure that the NiT community doesn’t go by the wayside. If we feel that strongly (I know I do) about what we have gained from NiT then we all need to continue to support it and contribute to it. It’s like when people leave church congregations because the preacher they really liked left. I hope we don’t have a large percentage of readers/users leaving NiT just because Brittney is no longer there. I suspect there will be some, but that makes our involvement all the more crucial.
amen to malia. i have to admit that my first impulse was to peace-out on NiT altogether. knowing that you’re pulling the strings for now has changed that impulse. thanks.
also: i know i’ve never showed up to any of the blogger events before (i’m a loser), but there are a lot of us who would like to thank brittney in person for all her good work, so perhaps a “thing” is in order?
[...] drafts love letter to Kat and Brittney June 7th, 2007 What started as a comment on this post at Kat’s turned into a novel, so I’ve pasted it here instead. The ‘you’ is [...]
I started a comment here but got carried away, so I posted it here instead.
You would be my first pick had they asked. Don’t let the assholes get to you.
Oh, and what Malia said.
I only said that I must eat a ladybug as a lure to lull you into thinking this was going to be an interesting post with thrill-a-minute Fear Factor overtones. It’s not.
Have you leaned nothing from watching Lost? This sort of reveal isn’t supposed to occur until the END of the post, if at all!
Yay Kat! I think you’re a wonderful pick for NiT. At least there’s someone helming it who cares. I was afraid they’d switch to automated aggregation, or pull in someone for whom it’s just another job.
I really did dream that you were going to replace Brittney. I wasn’t kidding. Maybe because it’s such a logical choice and i went to bed last night feeling so sad about what all had happened and how much I care about Brittney and NIT and all of the friends I’ve made thru NIT.
I wanted some solace. You hosting NIT = solace.
Lie is something you do by yourself.
Lay is something you do to an object.
I’m going to lie down.
I’m going to lay my car keys on the table.
Wow. That puts a whole new spin on the term “get layed”.
Tom’s right on the grammar question, though I think “lay low” might be an exception. It’s a common expression, and though “I’m going to lie low” might be more grammatically correct…it sounds kind of pretentious and awkward, at least to me. I’d still go with the “incorrect” “I better lay low for a while.”
