For years we cycling fans have chuckled and rolled our eyes at Bobke’s pronounciation of the Toor Day Fraants.
I guess linguistic mangling of place names goes both ways. I just heard Phil Liggett refer to “Mackin” Georgia.
At least everyone says “Pelaton” correctly.
As a former “Mackin-itte”…they deserve all the linguistic abuse heaped upon them. Houston Avenue in Macon, is pronounced (locally) HOW-stun; and Pio Nono Avenue becomes “PIE-ah-No-Nah”… go figure.
Well, the surname “Houston” can be pronounced either ‘Howston’ or ‘Hueston’ so if the street was named after someone called ‘Howston’ then that isn’t wrong. There’s a Houston Street in NYC pronounced that way, too.
There is, however, a Goethe Street in Chicago that gets pronounced ‘GO-ee-thee’. And that’s just inexcusable.
Yeah, everyone knows Goethe should be pronounced Gur-da. Like da cheese.
