Fat Girl Formals
April 14, 2007 by Katherine Coble
This story is good news for all the fat girls who’ve come after me. They actually design prom dresses in sizes larger than 14 now. I went to three proms in my teen years (so much for fat girls being unpopular or having to stay home!) and each time I wore a sized-up skinny dress. They weren’t all that flattering.
Apparently now, the designers are having such success with their Upsize Cinderella wear, that girls smaller than size 12 are asking for DOWNSIZED versions.
Maybe I’ll have a daughter after all.

I too, went to three proms in my high school years! I was very fortunate to have a mother (that doesn’t sound right, I still have her, she’s still with us!) who was/is a very good seamstress. She made all three of my prom dresses and my wedding dress!!!!!
Malia, you were fortunate.
I came from the era that believed “big” (more than size 12) girls were best hidden under piles of ruffles and sequins. I ended up looking like a very shiny pile of toilet paper.
Okay.
I know this is going to be hard to believe but I NEVER WENT TO PROM. We didn’t have them here (they do now) although we had drama and athletic gatherings at the end of the school year.
I’ve also never been invited to serve in a wedding. Even my sister’s.
I think it would be fun to get all gussied up.
I guess this is very weird.
But hell, I wear crocs and shorts with goofy T-shirts most of the time anyway.
[...] internet megastar* Katherine Coble opines (nicely) on a story about formal dress makers designing dresses larger than 14. This is obviously a good [...]
We weren’t allowed to have a prom! I went to a Christian school where dancing was a SIN!
We had a Junior/Senior Banquet.
Weird.
I think the styles of prom dresses in the 80’s were all pretty bad, regardless of dress size. All of the prom dresses from that era seemed a bit excessive - looking back on them today. Crinolines required for ‘poofing’. You don’t see much of that these days! How the trends do change!
