I Wasn’t Going To Write This Post, But I Changed My Mind

Dear Grey’s Anatomy:
What the frak? Seriously. When did this show decide that it was going to devolve from a discussion of smart young people trying to find their way in the world and become instead a soapy Kama Sutra-A Go-Go?
Are you trying to convince me to never again have surgery? Because from what I can tell based on your program all surgeons are too busy worrying about their dead mothers and live libidos to actually pay attention to the practice of medicine.
And really, I’m kind of insulted at the recent turn you’ve taken with George. We are all well-aware (whether we wanted to be or not) that the actor playing George is gay in real life. So of course it appears that you’ve done one of the things I hate more than anything else–you’ve gone overboard to butch him up.
George’s original character served a valuable function on the show. He was the representation of heart, emotion and whole person caring, and served to show how badly modern medicine is lacking in these aspects. Yet all of a sudden–not too long after the ‘f—-t’ incident, George became Playboy extraordinare. We left interesting directions about his response to his father’s death, his defiance of his mentor and idol Burke and his maturing as a practitioner on the floor. Instead we get to have week after week dedicated to how much of a lusty buck he is–desired by women of all body types and ethnicities! It’s insulting. We in the audience never really cared that TR Knight was gay. Now this protracted playing out of “the actor may be gay but the character is SOOOO not!!!” is getting old. [It's the flipside of my "I'm REALLY Straight" theory. 99% of the time that a straight actor plays a gay character they give about a jillion interviews waxing poetic about their wife and kids just to prove that the character they play on tv has nothing to do with them in real life. That dude who played "Will" on Will& Grace did this all the time.]
And speaking of those women who are now so hot for George’s doughy, puny bod, Izzy seems to have all of a sudden forgotten that the love of her life (whom she helped kill) is as dead as Latin. Now we’re supposed to believe, after many protracted weeks of her moroseness that Denny is a faint memory compared to her thang for George. I don’t buy it.
In fact, I wonder what happened to the show’s writers. This more and more feels as though the original writing team got tired of their jobs and handed off the work to a B-Team of soap opera veterans.

I agree with you on this week’s show. I think it was just a little too over the top to make George into such a stud.
On the other hand, Karev isn’t whoring it up anymore because he’s pining away for Addison. I think they have to have some male character shtooping the ladies just so that there’s enough of a harlequin romance component.
Alex is temporarily out of service and so is Sloan, so let’s turn george into fabio. “I can’t believe he’s not hetero” Oh yeah, I went there.
No, they want us to THINK that Karev is pining for Addison. But we all know she’s leaving for her little spin-off series.
What Karev is really doing is pining for the brokeface chick he pulled out of the water.
This way we get to revisit the Denny Douquette storyline all over again, with the added component of at least one of the Housemates wheedling Alex:
“You can’t settle down with her! You’re ALEX. She’s got a lot of medical bills and a KID!”
Yes. They WILL go there. I promise.
Oh, and Izzy’ll get all whine-y about “How come his patient-slash-lover gets to LIIIIIVE!!!”
I agree about the writing team. Who’s evej left from the original group? Shonda and Krista? They keep bringing in new writers. Every week on “the blog” it’s once again a new writer whining about how hard it is to join the writer’s group and then to write the post-production blogpost. Get over yourselves already!!
I’m sorry Shonda, but you’ve messed with a REALLY good thing that is quickly turning into a REALLY bad thing.
Is this writing team comprised of women who’ve been done wrong and instead of taking it out on the McSteamy’s of this world, they pulverize poor George? (I should have said, MEN or Women who have been done wrong).
I still like the show, but there is now officially more soap than opera.
I think this show explains why my mother can’t ever see her surgeon or get her post-op pain pills. Screw insurance muck-ups and regulatory paperwork — the staff is all in the linen closet with each other!
Seriously, though, hospital shows seem to always turn this way. And it is SO unrealistic. They are TIRED. And TICKED OFF. They do gossip voraciously on breaks (what workplace doesn’t?), but they don’t have the time nor energy to unzip their pants to potty, much less go at it (or try to go at it) every 20 minutes with a co-worker. And, um, does ANYBODY not have an issue with a supervisor/supervisee relationship anymore? HR would have had kittens, then made them sign waivers, a long time ago. Or simply transferred one of the residents to another floor. I’m waiting for some reality in the form of sexual harassment investigations when somebody breaks up.
I also would like to see Callie wih a show of her own. With Hector Elizondo getting a “Daddy, I am grown! Stop running my life!” lecture every week. I have a big ol’ girl-crush on Callie.
Ooh, Grandfille, me too! She’s so gorgeous.
